The retromandibular vein is formed by the union of the superficial temporal and maxillary veins. This descends within the parotid gland deep to the facial nerve between the mandible and sternocleidomastoid muscle. It then divides into anterior and posterior branches. The anterior branch joins the anterior facial vein to form the common facial vein, which drains into the internal jugular vein. The posterior branch unites with the posterior auricular vein to form the external jugular vein, which drains into the subclavian vein.
